Dimensions of Fashion

So many people tend to view the world of fashion as a closed book bound by pages that are cliche, indulgent and obsessive. They are dismissive of fashion, considering it to be some what shallow. With these negative stereotypes the true depth of this extraordinary industry cannot be realised. If you too have fixed your mind on such thinking I want to challenge you to broaden your perception and take a look at the wonders that lie beyond the fabrics and if you are a fashion lover like me, then I invite you to join me in celebrating the art of fashion.

To me, fashion is a form of art just like painting, sculpture, film and music. It is multi dimensional, intricate and driven by purpose. Designers, influencers and even just people like you and I chose to make a statement through what we wear. By wearing slouchy jumpers and track pants to the supermarket we are making an expressive statement whether we realise it or not and by choosing not to wear things like slouchy jumpers and track pants to the supermarket we are also articulating a certain image of ourselves… do you see what I am getting at? That’s the fascinating thing about fashion.

The roots of high fashion are undoubtedly grounded in the expression of thoughts, emotions and values, seeking to push the boundaries of what is acceptable. Every designer and their collections are driven by inspiration which then seek to influence the world around us. Fashion isn’t just created without a purpose. Look at the likes of Jean Paul Gaultier, Comme des Garçons, John Galliano and Viktor & Rolf, these experimental avant garde houses continue to stimulate innovation and redefine the limits of style.

What I love most about fashion is that it is an avenue for social change and has the ability to empower. Go back to the 1920s when women began wearing pants as a way of forging their path to freedom and independence and now look at designers like Dior with their ‘we should all be feminists’ t-shirts. It’s amazing to recognise the capacity of such a powerful tool. And of course fashion isn’t just all about wearing trendy clothes, its about having character and personality, which comes from the embodiment of confidence.

So I ask you, is fashion really just a world dissolved in superficial matter or could it be something more than just what lies at the exterior?
