Skinny, straight, ripped or flared, it’s safe to say denim has established itself as a timeless staple in every wardrobe. A versatile classic that flatters all shapes and sizes. It takes on a personality of its own.
I never realised or even considered the widespread popularity of denim that has never ceased. Like with everything in fashion, a garment extends far beyond its fabric, revealing a deeper significance. With denim, this starts with the creation of the fabric. Recently I discovered that denim was actually born out of a mistake. An unsuccessful attempt of weavers in France at reproducing cotton corduroy. So in an effort to replicate an existing fabric accidentally came a revolutionary look that would change fashion in times to come.
I guess sometimes mistakes can actually turn into our greatest successes. We could apply this to every aspect of life and in uncertain times like these it is more important than ever to remind ourselves of this message. Everything is about perception. With every challenge comes an opportunity. With every mistake comes a learning and in this case an iconic symbol throughout decades.
Denim has stood as a sign of rebellion, freedom and divergence from the ordinary. With a spirit of confidence and independence, it sought to challenge the rigid culture of the 20th century and so here we are. A symbol of everyday autonomy. Classic and timeless.
